Small anthropomorphic figurines in clay at Gipka neolithic settlements:
2005
Miniature Neolithic figurines in clay are a special topic of research. This especially concerns areas where their representation has so far been poor. While carrying out archaeological excavations in Northern Kurzeme, the north west coastal dune yone of Riga Bay, a ritual-like complex was recovered at Gipka A site belonging to the local Culture of Pit Ceramics. It consists of several large and smaller fireplaces and pits, with the finds of fragmentary clay figurines recovered under the palisade that surrounded the settlement. The head and body of the miniature anthropomorphic figurines in clay have original modelling. It is possible to single out two types of figurine: with rather broad che…
Joint Dynamic Resource Allocation for Coupled Heterogeneous Wireless Networks Based on Hopfield Neural Networks
2008
This paper proposes an algorithm to solve the problem of Joint Dynamic Resource Allocation in heterogeneous wireless networks. The algorithm is based on Hopfield Neural Networks to achieve fast and suboptimal solutions. The generic formulation is particularized and evaluated in an HSDPA and 802.11e WLAN coupled networks. Some illustrative simulations results are presented to evaluate the performance of the new algorithm as compared with other strategies. The obtained results confirm the validity of the proposal.
Environmentally-conditioned human rights: a good idea?
2021
The emergence of the rights of nature is a clear response to the current environmental crisis. But such trend is not to walk alone: it is to be espoused to the many still remaining human rights issues, otherwise the power and credibility of both are at danger. This chapter focuses on one of the many possible points of encounter between the rights of nature and human rights. It explores how they may be combined within biocultural rights—the basket of rights of indigenous peoples and local communities necessary to maintain their role as ecosystem stewards—and tries to understand what the consequences of combining nature and human interests as their foundations may be. In particula…
Tourism Statistics for Destination Management: The Trips/Arrivals Model
2014
Simply counting the number of tourists in a destination is not as simple as one might initially think. The present work intends to formalize a conceptual model by decomposing tourism nights, trips, and average duration of visit in a given destination, in terms of quantities and parameters that only for a small part could be derived from official tourism statistics. On the other hand, most of the quantities and parameters required for determining the number of tourists in a given destination are in general unknown, and need to be (directly or indirectly) estimated. Empirical evidences resulting from a survey on incoming tourism in Sicily are provided, showing the biases affecting supply-side…
The territories of tourism: a reflection about the experience of the Tourist Districts (Local Tourism Systems) in Sicily
2013
The tourist district is an important tool for territorial governance of regional tourism. The district is a type of Local System which is characterized by its multidimensionality, as well as the spatial contiguity of traders who belong to it. The territory is a space transformed by social interactions and relations of production: it is therefore the indispensable reference for measuring the impact of tourism. A bottom up approach in the process of identification of the districts is therefore vital. A Balance Score Card-approach is desirable to correctly manage this process. This study is a preliminary analysis derived from direct experience of the Sicilian tourist districts, recently formed…
Tunable antenna system for plug&play satellite avionics: Prototyping and test
2014
In the framework of an ESA program, a new architecture for plug&play compact antenna systems in the X band has been investigated and experimentally verified by many prototypes. The proposed antenna system takes inspiration from the LEGO building toys: the basic component of the new architecture is a 2.7cm-cube complex module that integrates a three-dimensional local network and a programmable mechanism based on the bonding-wire technology to select one among three polarization options. Elemental blocks can be augmented by accessories to shape the beam and may be used in array configuration over boards provided with cluster-level beamforming networks. Measurements have been performed for bot…
Social capital development of rural community based on social networking activities in Lithuania
2018
The scholar literature on simultaneous using of social capital explore knowledge and identity resources as well as actions and interactions benefiting the community through personal bonds of individuals; issues of common trust; and adapting the current understanding in new situations. In this article, we instead examine rural community influence on social capital building of adult person in a virtual community. A quantitative survey was done in 246 local rural communities in Lithuania which reflected their community activities on a virtual basis. From the data of 500 informants we found that rural community (human social network) members were also active in the virtual communities. Research…
Prenatal cocaine exposure alters spontaneous and cocaine-induced motor and social behaviors.
2005
The abuse of cocaine in pregnant women could affect emotional behaviors in their descendents. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of prenatal cocaine exposure on spontaneous and cocaine-induced motor and social behaviors in mice. Three kinds of prenatal treatment were used: non-treated animals; mice treated daily with physiological saline during the last week of pregnancy; and finally, those treated with cocaine (25 mg/kg) during the same period. Behavioral studies took place on adult males, which were housed in two different conditions: grouped (non-aggressive), or isolated (aggressive). Cocaine-pretreated animals exhibited slight differences in spontaneous motor activity, but…
Automatic program for peak detection and deconvolution of multi-overlapped chromatographic signals
2005
Several interlinked algorithms for peak deconvolution by non-linear regression are presented. These procedures, together with the peak detection methods outlined in Part I, have allowed the implementation of an automatic method able to process multi-overlapped signals, requiring little user interaction. A criterion based on the evaluation of the multivariate selectivity of the chromatographic signal is used to auto-select the most efficient deconvolution procedure for each chromatographic situation. In this way, non-optimal local solutions are avoided in cases of high overlap, and short computation times are obtained in situations of high resolution. A new algorithm, fitting both the origin…
Protocol for Low-level laser therapy in traumatic ulcer after troncular anesthesia: Case report in pediatric dentistry
2020
The aim of this study was to report a protocol of use for low-level laser therapy (LLLT) in traumatic ulcer in the lower lip after inferior alveolar nerve block anesthesia (IANBA). A 3-year-old patient, male, undergoing treatment of carious lesions was submitted to an indirect pulp capping in tooth 74 under IANBA. The procedure was completed without intercurrences, but on next day, the child presented extensive traumatic ulcer in the left lower lip, with complaint of pain. Two sequential applications with LLLT were applied in punctual mode under pressure around the lesion. After 1 week, the mother reported significant improvement. After 30 days, the lesion was fully healed. In conclusion, L…
